This ‘’Munitions Grade” item is not up to our normal high standards. Munitions grade items will typically have various bends or twists in the blades, basically rendering them as 2nds quality. These items are still a great choice for collecting and re-enacting and functional pieces will still be functional. Please keep this in mind when ordering.

Please Note: This falchion has a blade that has been sharpened, but the blade also has a bend or slight twist in its overall form. While functional, it is at a discounted price due to the blade straightness being below standard acceptability.

By popular request Kult of Athena commissioned a special production run of this sword which had been out of production by Windlass Steelcrafts. This popular model has now finally been brought back for new and established collectors alike!

The falchion has a reputation for being a hefty meat cleaver-turned sword, but often this is not the case - historical falchions were often deft and swift-striking swords optimized for decisive cuts and deep slices. This example from Windlass Steelcrafts is based on an example seen in a 1470-1480 painting by Antonio del Pallaiolo depicting St. Michael, sword and buckler in hand dueling a dragon. Like many historical falchions, this reproduction has notably agile handling characteristics for its type and its blade is suitably wide for strong cutting action. The tip is a capable piercing tool and its knuckle bow not only protects the hand, but can function as a knuckle-duster for close-in melee.

The blade is forged from 1065 high carbon steel and the hilt is steel with a grip of wood. The blade is stoutly mounted into the hilt with a peen over the pommel and the rectangular-shaped blade tang is notably more resistant to rotating or shifting over a simple round tang. A tight binding of stitched leather surmounted by braided brass wire ferrules completes the sword. It is paired with a durable scabbard of thick oxblood-dyed leather with steel fittings.

This falchion in form befits the style of a sword of its type in the late medieval or early Renaissance period. With its knucklebow and braided embellishment it would have likely been the sword of a knight or nobleman, a successful mercenary or a well-compensated professional man-at-arms.
