This ‘’Munitions Grade” item is not up to our normal high standards. Munitions grade items will typically have various bends or twists in the blades, basically rendering them as 2nds quality. These items are still a great choice for collecting and re-enacting and functional pieces will still be functional. Please keep this in mind when ordering.

The Seax was the fighting blade and tool for the everyman in Scandinavian and Saxon society. Commonly carried in a horizontally-aligned sheath at the belt, the Viking had his seax near at hand, whether he needed it as a tool or a quick-drawn fighting blade. Many seax were dagger-sized, though many examples would stretch to the size of short swords. This example sits on that fence as either a long dagger or a short sword.

Easier to construct than the sword, the quality of surviving seax vary widely as poorer men carried crude, though functional seax whilst others are masterworks of pattern-steel and embellished inlay reserved for only the most affluent Vikings. The spine on many seax belie its use as a tool, as it allows the user to lightly pound the spine with a mallet to drive the blade through a material like rope for a finer cut then with a sawing motion. Though they existed with the typically longer swords, there are some accounts of Vikings who preferred fighting with their shorter, fast seax. A testament to the universal use of the seax lies in the fact the the Anglo-Saxons derived the last half of their tribal name to the weapon.

This blade of this seax is made from high carbon steel. The hilt and pommel are of blackened steel. The wooden grip is tightly wrapped with wire that has been blackened. It comes with a leather sheath that has been stitched with leather strips
