Immortalized by Mel Gibsons portrayal of William Wallace, the Claymore sword has become one of the distinct, martial symbols of Scotland and its conflicts with England. Though the definitive forward-sloping quatrefoil crossguard Claymores are a late Medieval / Renaissance type of sword, there were other large two-handed swords used in an earlier Medieval Scotland. These could date to the history spanning the Wars for Scottish Independence, of which William Wallace famously features within. Those swords may have been similar to this Early Claymore.

This large, early Claymore has an unsharpened blade of high carbon steel. The crossguard and pommel are of antique-finished steel and the crossguard and ricasso are tightly overlaid with dark brown leather.
