This boarding axe has been based on a French original and is fitted with a hefty head of unsharpened high carbon steel. It is secured to a blackened hardwood shaft. Two langets protect the upper part of the shaft from the bite of enemy blades. It has an integrated steel belt hook / baldric hook for ease of carry.

Both weapon and tool, the boarding axe or ‘’Hache du Bord’’ was an indispensable aid to naval conflict in the Age of Sail. The boarding axe was not only ferocious weapon in close combat, but it could be used, as its name implies, to assist a boarder in ‘’boarding’’ a taller enemy vessel by using the pick to dig into the side of a hull and clamber on up. Once on deck it was not only useful in decisively dispatching a foe with its axe blade or pick, but it could be used to clear through debris and to chop apart locked and barricaded doors belowdecks.

Not just an offensive weapon, the defenders of a ship would use their boarding axes to clear away fallen and tangled rigging and spars and to dig out ‘’hot shot’’ (heated cannonball) that had become embedded in the hull and clear it away before a fire could break out. The hefty axe head could chop away the ropes on boarding hooks. With its weighted axe head, it could also be a cruel surprise to a boarder when a defender swung it down on him as he was about to come over the rail.
