The French M1829 Sabre de Cannoniers was a light cavalry-type saber that was a sidearm for horse artillery troops. Consisting of light artillery pieces pulled by teams of horses, Horse Artillery teams were drilled for speed to ensure that they could unlimber their artillery pieces from their horses, fire for effect, and then re-attach their guns to their horse team so that they could escape quickly if the foe moved against them.

Horse Artillery units often accompanied the cavalry of an army and could deploy quickly to soften up a enemy for a charge. If an infantry unit formed into a square to give themselves an advantage against threatening cavalry, their tight, concentrated formation could be dealt a severe blow by rapidly deployed horse artillery who could then pound a hole into the square formation with a fusillade of grapeshot. In the ensuing chaos, the formation could fall apart and the men would then be easy prey for the flashing sabers of the cavalrymen. A light cavalry sword such as this was a necessary issue to these artillerymen so that they could defend themselves should they be pounced upon by the foe.

This French M1829 Artillery Saber has a blade of high carbon steel. The guard and pommel are of brass and the grip is wrapped with stitched black leather. Comes with a steel scabbard with two steel hanging rings.

TLDR: Several imperfections of varying degrees but serviceable. Buy a blem when available, don’t pay the full price if it’s going to have this many issues as standard.

(Grip not as pictured ) The seams are actually facing down where your fingers wrap around the grip and mine came with a golden colored metal wire wrapped around in a spiral. These together with it being a little heavy for a sabre means that it bites into your fingers.

Balance was about 4-6 inches past the guard.

Blade had a slight bend but not dramatic.

Blade was not centered with the handle/guard. The handle and guard were angled slightly to the side relative to the edge.

Scabbard lockup is fine although the interior is thin foam and likely won’t last long.
