The Doge (Duke) was the elected head of the Venetian state for over 1,000 years, until 1797, when the last Doge (the 120th) was removed by Napoleon. Venice was a republic, ruled by an oligarchy with the Doge at its head. The Doge, like the Holy Roman Emperor, held office for life and was similarly regarded as the ecclesiastical, the civil and the military leader, in the power structure termed caesaropapism. Commonly the person selected as Doge was the most politically shrewd older man in the city.

Our sword, the Doge, is representative of the type of sword often associated with the republic of Venice. It has a broad flat blade that has clearly chamfered edges that run nearly parallel, a fuller that runs through the upper third, and a flat ricasso section at the base of the blade. The blade is of hexagonal cross-section. This example also has the characteristic spur at the end of the ricasso that is seen on Venetian examples of this type.

The Doge has a hand ground high carbon steel blade is tempered for flexibility and edge retention. The crossguard and pommel are cast from mild steel. The grip is stabilized birch wood, cord-wrapped and fitted over with tight leather.

The sword grip comes in a selection of colors, please select an option above.

The Doge was the first Albion I ever purchased. I remember looking through the photos of Albion’s swords, and when I saw the Doge I new I had to have it. I was already a sword enthusiast, martial artist, and collector, but I had never seen a sword which looked quite like this sword before. It is a very interesting sword which straddles two identities. Held in a “hammer” grip, the Doge feels like a relatively nimble arming sword. Held with the index finger through the ring guard, the Doge feels and moves like a side sword or early rapier. Its performance in cutting/thrusting this sword also strongly reminds me of some later military and/or cavalry swords. The blade length is such that it would function well from horseback. The Doge is executed with the high-end quality Albion is famous for, and it is a handsome example of a style of sword that isn’t often reproduced.
