Thegn or Thane, is an Anglo-Saxon title meaning an attendant, servant, retainer or official, usually in a military sense similar to the later knight. After the Norman Conquest, the existing thegns appear to have been absorbed into the emerging class of Knight. The Domesday Book, compiled after the Norman Conquest, still listed the thegns who held lands directly from the king with their respective counties, but the title became devalued over time, partly because there were so many thegns.

Albions Thegn is a tribute to those early military leaders and the sword represents one classic style of distinctly Anglo-Saxon sword hilts that date to the second half of the 9th Century. The curved upper and lower guards of this sword and the three lobed pommel with the prominent middle peak are typical features for Anglo-Saxon swords of this period. Though slightly smaller than other dark age swords available at Albion The blade is still broad at the base and the fuller is wide and well defined. This makes for a sword with quick handling characteristics.

The unique pommel, with its two saddle-shaped side lobes, are accented with a twisted strand of sterling silver wire on each side. The Knud has a hand-ground high carbon steel blade that is tempered for flexibility and edge retention. The crossguard and pommel are cast from mild steel. The grip is stabilized birch wood, cord-wrapped and fitted over with tight leather.

  1. Greg

A Viking sword of a Noble I Purchased an Albion Ghaddhjalt sword last year and after using it and falling in love with it i decided to purchase another. After much deliberation i decided to Purchase the ‘Thegn” It is misleading to look at the dimensions thinking that this is in anyway a “small” sword. It is light, slightly over 2 pounds but the sword moves wickedly fast. The blade is fairly broad and reasonably stiff but flexes nicely. It sings through water bottles and spaghetti Squash’s. it will reward good technique with excellent cutting results. It can be wielded for long periods of time because it is lighter. It has this presence that suggests brutally fast usage. As a side arm this would be a great choice. After your spear broke or ax was rendered useless having this on your side would be a great comfort. It seems to have a lot of ‘heart’ that you feel when you hold it. Albion did a GREAT job on this particular sword. The Blade is Very sharp and the fit and finish excellent. Its not a inexpensive sword. The quality is there. I think that if people handled one they would really like it and understand what it is all about. Also Kult of Athena is a great place to do business and i feel like they really care . Thanks
