The Plainsman Hunting Knife has a large blade of Damascus steel. The merging of a softer and harder steel to combine their properties has created a layered pattern akin to rippling water or a wood-burl pattern on the blade of this knife. The thick blade tang is riveted to plates of polished wood surmounted by plates of stag horn. The guard is of brass.

The knife comes with a stitched leather sheath decorated by strips of braided leather. It has both a retaining strap with a metal button and a belt loop.

Plainsman Knife This is a lovely knife for the price. It has a certain amount of heft to it which I like quite a lot, as many of my thicker knives tend to be a little bit too blade-heavy, but the thick tang on the Plainsman ensures it is balanced. The false edge on the back of the blade comes sharpened if you purches Kult of Athena’s sharpening service. To be honest, I was not expecting this to be the case, but I was not complaining. I will say, however, that the bevel is just too thick for the false edge to offer much cutting potential, but alternatively, one might see this thicker edge as being useful for chopping wire, branches, shrubbery, or animal bone. All-in-all, with the stag horn grip and damascus-steel blade, every version of this knife will be unique with its’ own patterns on both the blade and grip.

My first damascus knife This is my first damascus knife and is very good. The grip is very nice, too.

After spending a few days with this knife I’d say its pretty nice as far as looks go. It seems sturdy and has a heft to it that I wasn’t totally expecting. My major problem with the knife came in the form of the sheath, out of the bag the stitching was already falling out and it looks like a distant cousin of the sheath they have in the pictures. I had also ordered the KoA sharpening like another reviewer did and unlike them my false edge didn’t come sharpened and the actual edge wasn’t very sharp either leading me to believe that maybe a mix-up landed my knife in the “sharpened” box my mistake. after a few emails with KoA they seemed pretty slammed and I’m sure its just a understandable mishap but I’ve decided to kiss that ten dollars goodbye because sending it back and forth through the postal service would take far more time than its worth to me. overall I’m pretty disappointed with this purchase but I’m holding out hope that this was a fluke. they haven’t lost my business yet.
