In the early days of the Roman republic, the Romans were armed in the Greek style, their primary sword being a form of the Greek Xiphos. After numerous campaigns in the Iberian peninsula, the Romans adopted one of the short swords they encountered there as their primary weapon. The Gladius Hispaniensis or ''Spanish Sword'' is the ancestor of the more familiar Roman Gladius. The Del Tin Roman Gladius Hispaniensis dates from the 3rd century BC and features a leaf shaped blade and cast steel hilt. The unsharpened blade is made of well tempered Chrome-Vanadium steel with a hardness of 50HRC and is peened to the pommel for durability.
