The thin-bladed rapier is deceptively deadly - while lacking the impressively brutish heft of weightier blades, the tapered rapier is a sword design almost solely built for thrusting swordfighting techniques. Cuts and slashes are outwardly more impressive than the puncture wound, but the thin blade of the rapier allows it to penetrate deeply, without requiring much force - deep penetrative wounds are often more deadly, for most of the damage is internal, not to mention that critical organs lie mere inches from the skin's surface.

The rapier was primarily a civilian weapon, its design and technique was intended to be used in a tighter, urban environment where there is less room for a swinging, slashing weapon. Requiring little force to deliver a fatal strike, rapier schools focused on footwork and timing, with an array of grappling, kicks and hilt strikes to open up the opportunity for the critical strike. This example has a large scalloped, saucer-like guard on the hilt - more hand protection is evident on rapiers then earlier blades because civilian swordsmen were unlikely to be wearing armored gauntlets to protect the hand in an impromptu street fight.

Made in the Czech Republic by Fabri Armorum, this sword blade is made from carbon spring steel (type 14260.7). The scallop guard is welded to the steel hilt. The wooden grip is overlaid with black leather with intertwined steel wire. Made for heavy duty blade-on-blade combat, the sword is guaranteed for two years by the manufacturer under normal stage/sport combat conditions.
