The Schiavona was a premier military sword of Northern Italy, Central Europe and South-East Europe in the Renaissance. It was particularly favored in Venice, where the bodyguard of the Doge, who were employed entirely from Slavic regions, wielded the Schiavona. Venice recruited much of its soldiery from the Balkans and they brought their characteristic Schiavona swords.

The origin of the term ‘’Schiavona’’ is debatable, but in the Venetian dialect it refers to a slavic woman. It seems that soldiers preferred to refer to their weapons as a ‘’she’’ and calling it such may be a reference to its more easterly origin.

The Schiavona could have a variety of blades varying from cut-and-thrust types to broader backswords and characteristically had a complex hilt that could become a latticework-like shell guard. The pommel has a distinctive ‘’cats head’’ shape found in older German and Hungarian blades - a common feature in late medieval Central and Eastern Europe.Broad-bladed compared to the rapier, the Schiavona was a tough blade for professional fighters. The quality of surviving Schiavona varies wildly - some are works of art, whilst others are crude, though functional approximations of grander blades. Schiavona then seem to have been used by all strata of society - in the hands of mercenaries, the Venetian Doge’s personal Slavic guard, or the nobles.

This Schiavona sword, made by Fabri Armorum, is hand-made in the Czech Republic. The blade is made from carbon spring steel (type 14260.7). The blade is welded to the pommel for strength. The guard and pommel are of steel and the grip is wood with leather glued over top. Twisted wire is inlaid into the grip. Made for heavy duty blade-on-blade combat, the sword is guaranteed for two years by the manufacturer under normal stage/sport combat conditions.

Leather grips can vary from black to many shades of brown.
