This mid 14th century ‘’Schweizerdegen’’ has a blade forged from 5160 high carbon steel which is fitted into a composite hilt of steel with a well-formed grip of blackened hardwood. Please Note that it is normal for some small parts of the wood grip to be left natural and without the blackening near to where it connects with the crossguard as seen in the photos. Included with the sword is a thick leather scabbard with brass rings for wear.

Slim and light, this shortsword is in a style that is distinctively Medieval Swiss. These Degen swords often appear to be enlarged dolch or baselard daggers and these swords were known in the Swiss Cantons as ‘’basler’’ in the 15th century. Most are short swords with blades progressively lengthening in later centuries in some examples. These swords first seem to have appeared in the 13th century and would be a common sight among the Swiss until the 17th century.

Popular among civilians and soldiers alike, these swords were also a favored sidearm for the famed Swiss Mercenaries who, like their Landsknecht rivals, favored a short sword for fighting between and among the tightly-packed pikes and halberds of their mercenary regiments. An unobtrusive sword, the slim and thin profile of the Swiss Degen allows it to be easily worn as a reliable Medieval sidearm, available always whether in battle, camp or about town. The last photo shows an illustration from the Spiezer Schilling chronicle showing the men of Hasle swearing fealty to the Canton / City of Bern - the men are all armed with Schweizerdegen swords.
