The Ballock (or Bollock) dagger was one of the most popular daggers of the middle ages and Renaissance and was seen alongside the hip of Europeans of all social classes. A glance at the form of its guard belies the origin of the name. Period iconography and effigies often show a Ballock dagger on the hip of knights. Not just a warrior sidearm, crude examples have been found which almost certainly belonged to peasants. Finer examples in the early Renaissance were probably worn by the emerging merchant classes and some immaculately well-contrived pieces clearly belonged to the well-landed nobility. It may have reached an apex of popularity in Tudor England, as many Ballock daggers were found in the wreck of Henry VIII’s flagship, the Mary Rose.

All Ballock daggers have sharply tapering blades and lightweight, carved wood handles making them a quick weapon able to give an opponent a grievously deep puncture wound. They can be double or single edged blades. In the Victorian Era, historians renamed the Ballock dagger the ‘’kidney’’ dagger to conform to sensibilities of the time.

This Ballock Dagger has a single edged blade with a thick spine - perfect for puncturing lesser chainmail and the weak points in other armors. It has a brass quillon-like addition at the base of the blade - this was a feature seen on later Ballock daggers. The blade is of high carbon steel and the hilt is of carved horn capped by a steel pommel disk. Comes with a dark brown scabbard with integrated belt loop.
