These mail leggings (chausses) are crafted from flat rings of stainless steel that have been dome riveted and then darkened for a finish.

Please Note: Even though the rings are stainless, we cannot guarantee that the ring rivets are stainless.

Please Note: The tools used to rivet these stainless mail rings often flake bits of mild steel onto the rings – these flake-offs often rust, giving some of the mail a rusted appearance. These can be buffed off with minor effort.

It was very important to protect the legs of a warrior in any age when mail was a predominant form of armor. Chainmail may be good protection, but until the advent of plate most combatants opted to still use a shield as their first defense. Large shields often forced opponents to target the legs; evidence for this comes from mass graves from medieval battlefields, where a high proportion of wounds were dealt to the lower legs, followed by a strike to the head. Neglecting the legs, and in particular the shins, would not have been wise in such a fighting environment.

The need to protect the legs was especially important for cavalrymen when fighting infantry – the legs would be a stand-out, eye-level target for men on foot, thus making it essential to protect them.

Superb, but understand what you’re getting I bought the M/L size and the rings were VERY CLEAN with no black residue and almost zero rust. Note the description is incorrect – for the M/L the total weight of both leggings combined is ~12lb (they are NOT 12lb per leg!). However they still feel very heavy, more than I expected. Due to this, you will almost certainly need to buy either a good “Cuisse Belt”, or better yet, a tight fitting “Linen Pourpoint” in order to comfortably wear them. You’ll also want to buy straps to wrap around the ankles, and below and above the knee, to keep them in place and to reduce the felt weight. If you aren’t willing to do all this, then some lighter weight butted steel leggings, or aluminum riveted leggings, may be a better choice. Regarding the size, they felt comfortable on my legs when sitting, but too big at the top of the thigh – my thighs are only 23″ in circumference); however when walking they still feel a bit restrictive and tight when bending the knees (this is why you need the straps tight around your legs above and below your knees).
