A utilitarian helm, the Kettle hat was typically worn by medieval infantrymen and was common throughout all Europe. It was known as the Eisenhut in German and the Chapal de Fer in French – They both mean iron hat.

Fairly simple to create, the Kettle hat was already being mass produced in England around 1011 – more than half a century before the Norman Invasion. Both sight and hearing are unobstructed by this helmet, leaving the infantrymans senses sharp so that he may better respond to mass orders and organization. The wide brim is excellent at deflecting attacks coming from on high, and could foil a strike from the weapon of a horseman. These helmets were excellent in sieges, for arrows coming from above were deflected by the helmet brim. Just a slight downward tilt of the chin and helmet when trouble is sighted is all that is needed for most of the wearers head area to become a projectile deflection shield. As an added bonus, it gives the fighting man a bit of shade.

This helm is made from 14 gauge steel with riveted and welded construction. The interior of the helm has been blackened and is lined with an integrated leather suspension that with a leather tie so that it can be adjusted to fit. A buckled, integrated leather chin strap keeps the helm securely on the head.

Great Helmet. I was really surprised how good this looks and functions.
It’s a cheaper model, but its still works very well.

Great Helmet For Those on a Tight Budget This was my first steel helmet, so I was scared this helmet would come broken, be half rusted, etc. But then, about a week or two later, I received a box, weighing a hefty 6 lbs. I opened it up, and saw a shiny, clean, rust free helmet, that I’d only dream of till then. I put it on, and it felt too heavy, but doing research, this helmet weighs what it’s supposed too, and on top of that, after wearing it for about a week, my neck adjusted to the weight. I’m an average sized guy, and it reaches out on the sides, to MAYBE cover my shoulders, but that’s still fine, and it goes out in front enough to block the sun, which is great. If you’re hit in the head while wearing this guy, you’ll be able to tell, only by a small, “Dink” from something hitting it with enough force, but nothing annoying by any means. It doesn’t cover the face, obviously, but it provides shade, and protection, on the top of your head, and arrows. Is it pretty enough to use for cosplay, or a fancy halloween costume? I wouldn’t go with anything else, if given the money. The leather is of good quality, and I’ll be buying from Kult of Athena again. Very soon.

Awesome Absolutely awesome Kettle. Very heavy. Good quality steel. Liner is very nice. Plenty of room to wear an arming cap and mail coif. Buy this one. You won’t regret it.

Great Helmet. Very pleased with purchased. As noted in other reviews there is plenty of room for coif and chain mail. Heavy but this would provide plenty of protection. Good quality, and very well packed. Fast delivery. Highly recommend.
