This pair of splinted greaves are composed of 16 gauge steel bands riveted to a backing of sturdy leather straps. These backing straps are fitted with a steel buckle which allows them to be adjusted to fit around the shin.

Simple, but efficient, this type of armor was a lower cost option for the late medieval man-at-arms who needed stout armored protection but could not afford the form-fitted contours of custom-crafted greaves. They may lack the elegance of well-crafted plate greaves, but these splinted greaves are not to be underestimated in the protection they provide.

The protected area is essentially impervious to cuts; a lucky thrust from a blade might find the gap between the splints, but against a moving and fighting target this is easier said than done. This is practical armor for the medieval man-at-arms.

The idea of splinted shin armor was not unique to Europe – warriors of medieval Japan commonly wore their own form of splinted shin and forearm armor.

Please Note: Some of the photos display other accessories which are not included and are available separately. There are some photos that show the isolated components of this pauldron set on their own for clarity.
