$359.00$399.99

This Philippine-crafted Gladius has a sharp blade crafted of 5160/D2 blended high carbon steel. The hilt is crafted from two types of contrasting carved wood, and a protective brass plate sits atop the guard. The pommel cap is of brass. Comes with a wood-carved scabbard overlaid with black leather and brass fittings and rings.

Please Note: Due to being crafted in a tropical environment with native woods, it is common for these weapons to develop thin, minor cracks in the wood and the scabbard as the woods adjust to our more temperate environment. Cracks in items sent to you will not be harmful to the structural integrity of the item.

It is recommended that a light coating of protective oil is used to protect the wood from dryness and cracking.

The Gladius is the famed sword of the Roman Legions, by which the Mediterranean was made into a Roman lake and vast tracts of Europe and the Middle East came to know Pax Romana. Deceptively simple in design, the Gladius thrusts with lethal force, its sharply tapered, triangular point opening wounds gapingly wide after only mere inches of penetration. The thick blade makes it an excellent chopper and its shorter length keeps it light in the hand and swift on the strike.

Many of the foes of Rome fought with longer swords, but these larger blades are conducive to individual combat. The Roman Legionary fought as a cog in a larger formation, with soldiers working together to bring down their foes. Legionaries were trained to tie up a foe, leaving him distracted and open to a quick strike from their comrades. Like the quick strike of snake, the Legionnaire struck out, blade in hand and a single strike was well capable of rendering the largest of foes dead or dying. The Gladius was undoubtedly a sword of Conquest.
