The largest component of medieval Irish armies were the Kern (ceitherne or ceitheirn — a warband). Sometimes composed of displaced nobility and other times commoners in search of loot, these were mercenary forces that saw action in many conflicts across the British Isles.

Albions Kern sword displays a distinctly Irish form of hilt, with its ring pommel and slightly S curved ornate bowtie guard. This Irish single-hand sword has a broad flat blade with chamfered edges and a fuller that runs one-third of its length. The ricasso of the blade is flat, and the cross section geometry of the blade at large is hexagonal.

The Kern has a hand ground high carbon steel blade is tempered for flexibility and edge retention. The crossguard and pommel are cast from mild steel. The grip is stabilized birch wood, cord-wrapped and fitted over with tight leather.

The sword grip comes in a selection of colors, please select an option below.

Review and testing of the Albion Kern Irish ring pommel sword

This sword’s a treat. Absolutely gorgeous blade, with the decorated ricasso and beautifully executed hexagonal cross section. Very lightweight, but has a lot of blade authority due to the very light pommel. With a proper sharpening (something Albions sadly often don’t come with), this would be a superb cutter. As is, the geometry is very well designed for cutting, so even default sharpness is sufficient for backyard cutting.
