This large Bardiche Poleaxe has a blunt axehead of high carbon steel which is stoutly mounted and pinned to a hardwood haft.

The Bardiche is easily one of the hardest-hitting of axe types due to its large and hefty blade and this example is mounted to a longer pole than most to give the wielder even more reach and leverage. Though similar axes existed throughout Europe the dual-socketed and most recognizable form of the Bardiche was associated with Eastern Europe and Russia. Some were known to have been exported into Scotland in the 16th and 17th centuries.

Like many polearms, it may have had its origins as a farm and field tool which was re-purposed for war. In the case of the Bardiche its origins likely were among the large and broad-bladed cleaving axes used by butchers to cleanly behead cattle.
