This Roman Lorica Hamata is constructed from alternating flat and round rings of mild steel. The round rings are dome riveted and they alternate with solid flat rings. The individual rings are 9 mm in diameter and 18 gauge in thickness – they have been given a darkened, blackened finish. The shoulder panel doublets are framed in stitched leather and the Hamata is finished with a brass chest closure hook.
The use of alternating riveted rings is not simply a clever way to reduce the labor and cost of creating this Hamata – it was also used to create some examples of historical Roman hamata and perhaps for the same reasons. Round rings were created from clipped and riveted wire coils and the solid flat round rings were punched from steel sheets. The creation of a single Hamata required 24,000 – 30,000 links and was quite the labor intensive effort requiring weeks or months of work for an individual. But that effort could be rewarded with decades of reliable service with proper maintenance and the replacement of broken links as needed.
IMPORTANT SIZING TIP: To accurately measure whether you will comfortably fit into this coat of mail it is necessary to first wear the clothing or padded gambeson that you intend to wear beneath the chainmail. Then measure your chest size over these additional layers. This way the additional width of your chest with these accumulated layers is accounted for when determining if the mail will fit properly.
