The Hudson Bay Tomahawk is a practical and rugged frontier design with a broad chopping axe coupled with a flattened hammer back which makes it an ideal camp and pioneering tool. The axehead is crafted from drop-forged 1055 high carbon steel which is mounted onto a haft of durable American Hickory.

The axehead features a recessed screw in one side of the socket which can be used to re-seat the axe when it loosens from use. By using an allen key of the right size the screw can be inserted further into the haft to tighten the fitting of the axehead to the haft. Care must be taken not to over-turn the screw however, as pushing it entirely into the wood and past the axehead socket renders this feature entirely useless. For best results the axehead should be moved as high up on the haft as it can go to find a spot with a good and tight fit before securing the axehead with the recessed screw.

Everywhere I look this Tomahawk is more expensive than any other cold steel wooden handled hawk. I think I see why: It’s better for woodworking tasks than their other models of tomahawk that cold steel has provided to date. That said, mine came with one hell of an awful flat grind on it, rusty and uneven, even! Took a bit to get it back into shape even with a Worksharp Mk. II belt sharpener. Very head heavy, however the 22″ shaft allows for plenty of room with a two handed grip. If the head comes loose like it did on mine, hammer it back into place and snug up the set screw with Loctite. Then it’s never coming off. Teardrop ergonomics of the handle allow very precise control over the direction of the blade. Wood is super dry too, needs light polish. Mainly been using this to split lumber since I got it, I set it on the log and then hammer the back end of it. Works Brilliantly. A bit of a daimond in the rough but with a little TLC this baby is an excellent choice for a Tomahawk with some woodworking value.
