The Practical Plus Katana is a new addition to the Hanwei Samurai sword line, providing a very economical cutting sword as dependable as the Practical Katana , but using more traditional fittings and construction methods. The blade is forged and differentially tempered (HRC60 edge, HRC40 back) and the hamon is prominent. The Practical Plus features genuine Rayskin (Same) on the Tsuka, with a wrap (Tsuka-Ito) specially developed for its gripping qualities. The long tang is double-pegged for security. The fittings of the Practical Plus are decorated in a Japanese Dogwood motif with dragon menuki, and the handsome Tsuba is of an iron sunburst design with a brass habaki. Includes wooden scabbard with black laquered finish.

I ordered one of these in their Black Friday sale of 2019. A step up from the regular Practical Katana. The fittings are more detailed, the samegawa is genuine and the longer tsuka is preferable. It can also be dismounted making it a staple cutter in many dojos that require it able to be taken down for inspection and cleaning. You can also swap out the tsuba and make it more personalized. The menuki are actually lion dogs, not dragons. Good value and one of the longest running models produced by Hanwei.

This is the first Paul Chen Hanwei sword I purchased and it made me a customer for life. It is still one of my favorite blades and favorite cutters.

After buying many swords from different forges and several Nihonto from Japan this is still my favorite sword. Its light but cuts like a heavier blade and has never bent or become dull. Mine is so old the ito needed to be replaced so I mounted it on a Highlander Tsuka, tsuba and it turned out really cool and keeps cutting. Kult of Athena always has the lowest prices and largest selection of sharps.
