LK Chen’s Disc Guard Cutting Jian is a fine reproduction of the mid to late Ming Dynasty Jian and it is a joy to hold and to use thanks to LK Chen exhaustively recreating the dimensions from a historical original. Quick and responsive, the sword feels like a natural extension of the arm thanks to its careful and attentive balancing. The wide and durable blade with its rounded tip is optimized for swift cuts and slashes and its blade is impressively distal tapered to ensure it has a strong base and balanced performance. Sharp and tempered, the blade is forged from GB 60Si2MnA High Carbon Manganese Spring Steel (a steel similar to 5160 high carbon steel) with a tempered hardness of 54-55 HRc.

These later Ming Jian have a boldly formed pommel that is of a lighter, open metalwork design. Its ornamentation is deliberately simple, but still expressive. The guard is quite large and gives excellent hand protection and the blade is the ideal length for an well-rounded sword that can be used both in open or confined spaces or situations. The tang is fitted to the pommel by a pommel tab that is riveted to the tang and wood grip. That grip is then tightly bound in genuine blue rayskin to complete the sword. The guard and pommel are both crafted from stainless steel with an antiqued gray iron finish.

The scabbard for the sword is crafted to fit from wood which is then wrapped in faux leather and completed with antiqued stainless steel fittings to match.

Why does a Chinese sword have Japanese Tsuba for a guard?
