The Romans developed this weighted version of the classic pilum to deliver a harder impact and better armor penetration to their pre melee javelin volleys. Features a hardwood shaft with blackened steel javelin head, weighed ball and end cap.

Fit and finish is well done. I am very happy with it.

This thing is HEAVY, but hey, it’s weighted, so that’s kind of the point. I haven’t had the chance to throw it, but it is solidly constructed and feels great in the hand. The wood is much lighter than depicted, though I honestly think that makes it look cooler.

      The pros:
It came with a thin (I assume leather or painted rubber) wrap just below the wooden ball weight where the weapon is balanced for throwing. The steel penetrator is very heavy duty and does not seem liable to bend or break on impact, and cannot be bent by hand as you could with soft iron. The javelin is long (around 7 feet) and heavy and will definitely smash a shield and armor if you have the skill to aim it well. I could accurately throw this about 15 meters, but that’s mainly me, I have no prior javelin throwing experience. The weapon is decently balanced, the fulcrum being just inside the ball weight making it very slightly front heavy, but it is not liable to fall out of your hand. The wooden ball weight could be shaved down if that is a big issue for you.

      The cons:
Came with a much lighter finish than expected but that’s no biggie. Additionally, the tip of the buttspike was bent on arrival, probably from either faulty handling or packaging, but that should be easily repairable.
