The Tiberius Gladius has an unsharpened blade forged from high carbon steel. The hilt is crafted into form from carved and polished wood. The base of the guard is fitted with a brass guard plate – the pommel nut is likewise cast from brass. The companion wood-core scabbard is overlaid with black leather on its back and sheathed in steel upon its front. It is encased and framed within embossed brass embellishments and accent pieces. The four hanging rings are also of brass.

The Tiberius Gladius is replicated after an original Mainz-type Gladius which is kept within the collection of the British Museum. Crafted around 15 AD, only the blade and scabbard survive – the original hilt, likely of wood, has long since rotted away.

If the scabbard is any indication, the entirety of this Roman sword must have been nothing less than magnificent at its time. The intricate plates of tinned bronze depict Emperor Augustus as Jupiter, receiving the statue of Victory from his adopted son, (and later Emperor), Tiberius at the conclusion of a successful campaign in his name.

This elaborate Gladius was likely commissioned by a senior Roman Army officer to mark the conclusion of a victorious campaign in Germany. The sword itself may have been gifted to another General or the Emperor himself to mark the accomplishment of the Roman Army.
