The Irish Skean / Scian is an Irish long-bladed medieval dagger for war and self defense and this reproduction has a tempered blade of EN45 high carbon steel. The blade has a thick spine that gives it excellent rigidity and making it ideal for puncturing a target in addition to cutting with its single edge. The guard and pommel are cast brass and the grip is polished wood. Included is a sheath of stitched double-layer high quality vegetable tanned leather complete with hanging loops.

From the 14th to the 16th centuries, the Irish Medieval warriors wielded a distinctive type of dagger known as the Skian or Skean, a term derived from Gaelic meaning simply ‘knife.’ These formidable blades, characterized by their long, single-edged design, were a hallmark of some of Medieval Europe’s most formidable fighters. Although vividly illustrated in period artwork, authentic examples of these daggers are exceedingly rare. They are most famously associated with the Gallowglass mercenaries, renowned for their fearsome prowess on the battlefield.
