The British 1796 Light Cavalry Saber has an unsharpened blade forged from high carbon steel. The hilt is mild steel with a leather-bound grip of wood. The scabbard is steel with steel hanging rings.

With its distinctive flared hatchet tip, the 1796 Light Cavalry Saber was a vicious cutting and slashing sword. The blade performance was envied to the point where 1796 type sword blades were being exported to India and being re-mounted into Tulwar hilts by Indians who evidently preferred the British blade to their own.

With a simple, yet effective no-nonsense design, the 1796 quickly became a classic light cavalry sword and its design was closely emulated by other powers for their own cavalry.

UPS showed up today with this saber. The fit and finish is very nice. It definitely has a lot of blade presence. I opted for the KOA sharpening service. They did a really nice job and put a convex edge on it. It easily cuts through pool noodles and water bottles. It was packaged very well. There was a dent in the side o the box from rough handling during shipping but there is no damage to the saber or the scabbard. This is my second purchase from KOA and I am very pleased with it. Hopefully I will be able to make another one soon.

Decent handling, once you get used to the weight. Plenty of blade presence, and has no problem cutting through hard targets like big gourds, including on the sharpened false edge.

My biggest complaint with it is that the backstrap was pretty horridly done. It’s off-center and has a lot of really sharp edges that tore up my hand, and I had to grind those down, which ended up doing some minor damage to the leather grip. The handguard had those acute angles, as well.
