The Hanwei Anglo Saxon sword is more unique and ambitious than the vast majority of sword reproductions by going so far to as to reproduce the blade structure used in many dark age swords. The central core of the sword is folded / pattern welded steel to give it a flexing / resilient core and its blade edges are well-tempered and harder 1095 high carbon steel which have been forge-welded to the core. This combination of softer steel with harder edges was a traditional forging technique for swords of the early dark ages and while laborious to create, it would forge a better sword with the materials and technology available.

The design of this sword comes from a 9th century example in the collection of the Yorkshire Museum and was found in the bank of an English stream in 1976. The guard and pommel are of darkened and antiqued stainless steel and the wood grip is bound in brown leather and embellished with decorative metal banding. The scabbard is of wood which is wrapped in tightly stitched, matching leather and well embellished with fittings to match the hilt.
