This lavishly embellished example of a Shashka saber is reproduced from an original belonging to a Kazakh Cossack in the Imperial Russian Army. Though Cossacks are most famously associated with Russia, Cossacks had also been living in Kazakhstan since the early 19th century and the country itself had long been enmeshed with the Russian Empire. The blade of this example is forged from tempered 1055 high carbon steel and it is etched on both sides with the regalia of the Russian Tsar.

The guard and pommel are cast from brass and full of fine scrollwork detailing and the grip is painted wood which has been well-carved. The matched scabbard for this Shashqa was made from wood and is bound in black leather and completed with brass fittings and a brass hanging ring and many of these pieces feature lavish detailing to match the sword hilt.

I love the design and fell in love with its gentle curvature but hate the thickness of the distal taper. Very doubtful the real shashka had such little difference in thickness between the fore and the hilt. This makes a light sword such as this unreasonably tip heavy. Great for one powerful stroke but recovery will take some good strength and a lot of practice.

The sheath, made with nice thick leather and beautifully decorated chape and other fittings, is somewhat misaligned and cannot be sheathed flush, but not a big issue for me. Just about every saber I bought from USN fits flush. This saber costs on the higher end of USN sabers but the copy I received does not fit totally or near totally sound.

As usual, I’m buying this for overhauling the blade for swinging and playing, and don’t care about it being possibly functional in a battle, so whatever. Great costume piece and being just light enough for short sessions of backyard cutting because the awful balance will probably tire you out.
