A casual glance at the photo might make one think this is just a knife, but it is quite a bit more than that. This 15th – 16th Century German Rutger is more akin to an Arming Sword in its dimensions and its blade is quite wide with a thick spine which tapers to a thin edge to make this sword an excellent slicer and cutter. Its proportions are well optimized because it is a close reproduction of a period original in the collection of the Museum of Visegrad.

The blade exhibits excellent distal taper and the tip retains enough thickness to reinforce the tip for surprisingly capable thrusts. The sword has a heft and presence to it that feels very robust and capable of fast and vicious slashes and cuts. Altogether with a solidly peen-riveted barrel nagel, this sword is wholly infused with the character of the Holy Roman Empire and its famed Landsknecht Mercenaries.

The blade is crafted from well-tempered 6150 high carbon steel with a keenly honed edge. The tang of the sword is very thick and its not only triple-riveted to its polished beech wood grip scales, but also given a solid and thick peen over the pommel cap to create a practical sword with a very tough and lasting construction. Included with the sword is sheath of thick and finely stitched high quality vegetable tanned leather. Its finished with a knotted sword belt of leather with a bronze buckle and chape.

Landsknecht Emporium products aim to have the aesthetics of historical pieces, not the finish of mass-produced items. Each product bears the signs of its making; small tool marks and imperfections, which do not affect the build quality or usability but give each of our pieces its unique character. These may manifest in scratches on the blade or finish or small filled and stabilized wood cracks that do not affect durability or structural integrity after having been professionally treated when crafted originally.
