This Russian Shashka Saber has a blade crafted from EN45 high carbon steel. The bolster and pommel are of brass and the ridged grip is crafted from carved wood. A leather retaining strap is fitted to the pommel.

The wood-core scabbard is overlaid in black leather and finished with protective brass fittings. It can be worn with its center brass hanging ring and the leather strap with steel D ring.

The sword of the famed Cossacks and later adopted by the cavalry of the Soviet Union, the sweeping blade of the Shasqa is eminently suited for slashing cuts from horseback. The long fuller reduces weight and the thick spine of the single-edged blade ensures that it strikes home with considerable force.

The curved pommel not only keeps the hand in the grip, but can be used to brace the back of the hand against the pommel and allow the sword to slightly pivot around the back of the palm in the strike. A similar form can be seen on Turkish and Persian horsemans sabers. The Shaska is typically worn edge-side up, like a katana.
