This Baselard is a large sword-hilted dagger optimized for war and campaign; the blade is sharpened 420 stainless steel with a rigid and sharply tapered blade ideal for powerful puncturing thrusts. The hilt is polished wood surmounted by guard and pommel plates of steel. The dagger is matched with a wood-core scabbard which is bound in tight leather.

This dagger has a hexagonal cross-section at its base which gives the blade a high degree of durability and stiffness and this tapers into a diamond cross section to create an acute piercing point. A durable dagger built for thrusting into the weak points of an armored defense and piercing through mail and thick cloth was essential, particularly if one should find himself grappling with an armored foe in the thick of a scrum.

A sidearm such as this would have been a necessary part of a medieval man-at-arms kit and likely would have been purchased out of his own funds. He would want a dagger that was durable, highly effective and within his means. A large dagger such as this might have been cumbersome for everyday wear in a civilian setting, but when on campaign and in battle its longer and sturdier blade coupled with an encompassing hilt built for hands with hand protection would have been greatly appreciated.

This War Baselard is of superb quality! I cant pick out any flaws. The hilt is extremely solid, made with beautiful hard wood, and the plates surmounting it have absolutely no gaps. I have big paws and the baselard is comfortable in them, especially in hammer grip. The profile with the hexagonal cross section tapering to a diamond tops it off. Not to mention it is extremely sharp and durable. I might just buy another. 10 out of 5!!
